SolarComtech Inc. announced today that a major North American utility has selected its SC-Connect Utility Hubs for a critical grid modernization pilot program. The project will deploy the advanced Industrial IoT (IIoT) communication devices across 50 substations to enhance real-time data acquisition and remote control capabilities.
The Need for Real-Time Visibility
As renewable energy sources and distributed energy resources (DERs) proliferate, utilities require more granular, real-time visibility into their distribution networks. The SC-Connect Hub is designed to address this need by providing a secure, ruggedized, and highly reliable communication gateway for legacy and modern grid assets.
"The SC-Connect Hub is a game-changer for utilities looking to transition to a truly smart grid," commented David Chen, CTO of SolarComtech. "Its multi-protocol support and robust security features make it the ideal bridge between field assets and the utility's central control system. This pilot is a testament to the reliability and advanced capabilities of our IIoT technology."
Pilot Program Objectives
The pilot program aims to achieve several key objectives:
- Enhanced Situational Awareness: Provide operators with sub-second data on voltage, current, and power quality across the distribution network.
- Faster Fault Isolation: Utilize the hub's edge computing capabilities to quickly detect and isolate faults, minimizing outage times.
- DER Integration: Securely manage the bidirectional power flow from customer-owned solar and storage systems.
The successful completion of this pilot is expected to lead to a broader rollout across the utility's service territory, further solidifying SolarComtech's position as a key enabler of grid modernization.
